Welcome to Trout Heavens Blog page. http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/ Second time today http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/second-time-today/
We took a drive to the Rhubarb Café in Arapuni for coffee this afternoon. They were busy been Mother’s day but with their prompt service we made it back home in time to .....Shift stock with a spinning rod and the camera in hand. The camera setting corrected I caught my smallest fish for the day, that’s fishing. The area will be worth a look at tomorrow as very little rain has fallen today.

Sun, 13 May 2012 01:49:29 -0500 http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/second-time-today/ Check your camera setting http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/check-your-camera-setting/

I changed the camera setting last night to take a shot of our Pizza oven. Oh dear. The pictures of the six Rainbows I have just caught over the last hour haven’t come out. It is Mother’s day I don’t think I should push my luck to go out again.
Sat, 12 May 2012 20:20:19 -0500 http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/check-your-camera-setting/ Our new arrival just after midnight http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/our-new-arrival-just-after-midnight/

She was born just after midnight so that is her name. Just how good can you get it? Another wonderful day on the Puniu. The sun was warm and the fish were there just waiting to be caught Today there were Wax eye’s, Tui and silence expect when Wendy fell over in the river. Molley spent the two hours or so that we were fishing running the river banks looking for river rats or trying to catch our fish when we hooked them. It is afternoons like this that I remember all of the reasons why we moved here.
Mon, 16 Apr 2012 23:31:57 -0500 http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/just-a-lazy-sunday-afternoon/ New BlogEntry http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/new-blogentry-12/

Sat, 11 Feb 2012 21:53:49 -0600 http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/new-blogentry-12/ An afternoons fish on the lower Waipapa River http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/an-afternoons-fish-on-the-lower-waipapa-river/

Mon, 30 Jan 2012 02:15:40 -0600 http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/an-afternoons-fish-on-the-lower-waipapa-river/ My fishing buddy http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/my-fishing-buddy/

I’m try my best to land a trout while Molley is ?? Well the season started as a shocker. The rain came down and the river up. Things have now settled down and the fishing improving.

Craig Farrar and Rob Vaz from the NZ Fly fishing team ran a one day clinic base around Trout Heaven. Everybody caught trout, polished up their fishing skills and enjoyed the day. A quick BBQ on our deck concluded a successful day.

Wikus and Adell from Johannesburg stayed for a few days last week. Shorts, booties and plenty of fishing. The Puniu, Mangatutu and Waihou Wikus enjoyed his stay.

This weekend is looking great to get out and have a fish. The pictures from last weekend that is. The great fishing continues. A young lad from TA has been out here fishing. Last night just on dusk he was waiting for the evening rise when I was checking out who was fishing on the water. OK I am a right noisy bugger.

Just about poetry in motion. Casting to rising trout in the fading light, and a hook up. Two nights before Cameron caught fire brownies of 1 ½ to 2 lb and a larger one that broke off. This is well worth a try through the summer months.

Roll on the summer season
Mon, 26 Sep 2011 01:35:34 -0500 http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/i-found-it/ Life is not all about fishing http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/life-is-not-all-about-fishing/

I went for a fish Saturday afternoon and downloaded the pictures and???? Well at least to the end on this week anyway. And more importantly the fishing just gets better.

Young Sam Bourne was down on Saturday. Congratulations to you both on that little bit of news. Now back to the fishing. With a catch count of over 30 you can see Sam enjoyed a great days fishing.

With some both Browns and Rainbows over 2lb Sam was very impressed with the number and condition of the trout in the Puniu.

I fished for a couple of hours this afternoon and caught about a dozen. ( could have been 18 ) I tend to loose count when I run into double figures. My first fish was the 1lb brown shown above. Then about ½ ways around something large broke me off. My line straight out downstream, I was just about to cast. When with a flash of silver, bang. Nymphs, trace and inductor gone. Try Czech Nymphing with a cameo leader and no inductor.

By the way Molley spooked a deer. I am not sure who received biggest fright. Molley, the deer or me.
Tue, 06 Sep 2011 00:29:23 -0500 http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/the-fishing-just-keeps-getting-better/ Another successful day on the Puniu http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/another-successful-day-on-the-puniu/

A wee brown the first of over 30 trout caught and released on Sunday . Colin just after netting one of the many great condition trout he caught.

It looks like the rain has passed over us. A total of 2 mm fell in Ngaroma, just enough to wet the ground. This will have very little effect on the river level. I enjoyed a quick fish yesterday afternoon in a beautiful clear Puniu. I caught the small rainbow shown above on a Lady Gaga. All the trout caught lately are in great condition and when fishing with 4wt or 5wt rods they put up a great fight.

On Sunday Colin and I wandered down to the “Pines”. In no time at all I was releasing my eighth fish. Colin started a little slower but his first two fish were beauties in the 1 ½ lb range. Up stream from the pine is a long slow run. I very nearly bypassed it then decided that having all day to fish I would try a couple of flicks on the way up. Did this ever prove to be the correct decision? With Colin following about 3 rod lengths behind me we both caught fish all the way up to the top of the run.

After catching and releasing over 30 trout in about 3 hours we had covered the stretch of river we wanted to check out. Mostly stony bottomed, one section looked a little like the upper Waipapa with channels cut in to the rock bottom. This area was hard on the ankles and a little difficult to wade. Above this is a large run with submerged boulders, could be good for dry fly later in the season .In all easy fishing water that does not see much fishing pressure. Just successful day fishing on the Puniu.
Thu, 01 Sep 2011 02:04:56 -0500 http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/another-successful-day-on-the-puniu/ New BlogEntry http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/new-blogentry-8/

Fri, 26 Aug 2011 00:53:14 -0500 http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/new-blogentry-8/ Yoshi bugger http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/yoshi-bugger/

We spent the weekend up in Auckland. How the hell do you put up with the traffic? Saturday afternoon on the motorway seemed like week day morning peak hour eight years ago.

Back home mid afternoon on Sunday gave me time for a quick fish. Set up with a slow sink line I selected a brown Yoshi Bugger. These two fish in about ten minutes. A good choice of fly and the trout are still around. While shifting my stock on Monday afternoon I tried a few cast in the same spot and hooked up on a rainbow.

The weather for the rest of the week leading into the weekend is looking great. Saturday is my pick for the day to fish. Love the posh dressing gown Una, anything to keep warm. Would have loved to have joined you whitebaiting on Monday. Why travel down to the Taupo area when the fish here are just waiting to be caught. Try the Waipa or join the AFAC fishing trip to the Ohinemuri. Wendy and I fished the Puniu last Saturday before the weather turned for the worst. The Bronze spinner worked well on the browns and the rainbows just fell for Lady Gaga.

I think the Puniu may be suffering for fishing pressure .After all, 4 people fishing in the last 3 weeks. 12 hours fishing in all. I may just visit the Waipa next.
Thu, 18 Aug 2011 02:34:40 -0500 http://www.troutheaven.co.nz/blog/it-snowed-in-awakino-on-monday/
